upgrading. slowly.

left to my own devices, i'm not what they call an early adopter. sure, i'll take a fancy new phone if someone gives it to me, but it's rare for me to upgrade on my own before my current device stops working. i've had the same car for 14 years and found myself getting misty-eyed when i had it towed recently, fearing it was the end (it wasn't, starter died). and there was my trusty Nokia (still miss it). but things are changing, starting with my microwave.

i rescued the microwave from a friend 8 or 9 years ago.
this microwave is big and it is heavy and it took two people to get it out of my apartment. it was manufactured in 1983, making it older than one of my ex-boyfriends.
before you start thinking that i'm whimsically tossing out appliances, you should know that it started taking 4 minutes to heat a cup of water. i guess the strange part about that is i don't yet consider that "not working".

my friend Brooke helped me load it into the car and came with me to the electronics recycling center where i only had to pay them $3 to take it from me (what a bargain!). there we found a treasure trove of discarded appliances wrapped in plastic wrap in an almost artistic fashion. i found it to be an oddly comforting place.

thanks for the new microwave, Arti. the next victim will be my television, which was made the fall after i graduated from high school. unless my car dies first.

I remember as a child when our family went to the local Sears and bought our first microwave. I may have been 10-11 but can't remember. It had a large mechanical, spring loaded, dial on the front that you twisted to the right amount of time and that would activate the thing. My sister and bro-in-law inherited it after they married. I was 16. A year after they got hitched my nephew was born. The microwave died last year. (2009) My nephew was born in 1986.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
